In Gold, a blue enamel star with rays in each quadrant, the obverse medallion features PIVS IX surrounded by a ring inscribed VIRTVTI ET MERITO, the reverse medallion presents a white disc with inscription ANNO MDCCCXLVII, measures 56. 5 mm (w) x 63. 5 mm (h inclusive of integral ring), weighs 38. 2 grams including ribbon, partial mark on the ring, chips to the blue enamel, worn on original neck ribbon,
